RUG CLEANING, REPAIR & CONSERVATION

Our highly skilled restoration & conservation team, based in London, carry out repairs using the traditional knotting methods of each region. A key aspect of conserving and restoring a Persian or Oriental rug/carpet is using the correct knotting type, age matched wool and the correct cleaning methods for rugs with natural dyes.

The time it takes for a repair to be completed varies depending on the extent of the damage, however most small repairs can be expected to be completed within 1-2 weeks.

Persian & Oriental rugs can be brought into our London warehouse weekdays from 9.30am-5pm by appointment, or our Hampshire Retail stores weekdays & Saturdays from 10am - 4pm. (Estimates by Persian rug expert Masoud Mazaheri-Asadi are on Wednesdays & Saturdays in Hampshire). In the case of an emergency (e.g. flood damage, etc.) please call 01264 811033 / 0208 8002626. Alternatively we can also come and view the rug in situ and then collect it for the necessary work to be completed.

If you would like us to see the rug in situ and guide you on how to proceed or for us to collect the rug to be cleaned/repaired please fill in the form here.

Rug & Carpet Repair

At Bakhtiyar we believe that no rug is ever a lost ruin, beyond repair. As Persian Poet Rumi once said “where there is ruin, there is hope for treasure”. Our team of highly skilled cleaners and restorers, based in our London Warehouse, carry out repairs using the traditional knotting methods of each region to fully restore rugs to their former glory, taking wool dated from the same period as the rug was woven to perfectly match the rest of the piece.

As well as carrying out general repairs, we work with many historic organisations to clean and restore rugs bringing them back to life, in some cases removing 200 year old stains.

There are certain tell tale signs that your carpet needs to be repaired that if noticed early on can help save extra cost when repairing your rug. One such example is the fringe of a rug, which may show early signs of damage such as fraying. The fringe runs through the entire field of the carpet forming the warp strings, which contains each knot making up the visible pattern. It’s essential to put right any damage to this area as soon as possible to prevent damage to the main field of the carpet arising from the carpet’s weakened foundations, a far more costly and time consuming repair.

The binding that runs along the edge of a rug is another indicator of its health. The binding of a rug frames the knotted weft strings, protecting them from fraying. Any damage to this area should likewise be repaired immediately to prevent loss of the main field.

Rug & Carpet Cleaning

Along side the importance of restoring/preserving a rug/carpet it is quite important to keep them professionally cleaned as this can help prevent future damage occurring in your rug. The reason we say professional is due to the rugs using natural dyes and using chemical cleaners on them can cause more damage to a rug that can be quite costly to restore.

Over time grit and dirt build up in the rug and can form small sharp stones that cut the knotting of the rug leading to wholes and loss of knotting, A simple professional cleaning of your rug every 5 years can help prevent this from occurring.
